Deactivate tracking by Google Analytics correctly: How to set the opt-out link
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 02.06.2019 at 6:52 pm
To make your Opt-Out-Link for Google Analytics work in WordPress: Use the text mode of the WordPress Editor. Place a normal URL as a placeholder link first. Replace URL in the generated HTML link with JS call. Make sure that the actual opt-out script is in the source test before the JS call. Websites that use Google Analytics must give their visitors the opportunity to opt out by mid-2019. This means that there must be a link that, if clicked, deactivates Google Analytics Tracking for exactly […]

WordPress is more than a CMS for blogs: Four professional examples of WordPress as a business tool
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 04.03.2019 at 10:26 pm
Again and again I come across the prejudice that WordPress is a solution with which you can run blogs in particular. The fact is: WordPress can be used to create an unbelievable number of applications that you wouldn’t think of at first glance. For almost 10 years now, my own business website has been based exclusively on WordPress. This makes me more flexible than with any other content management system (CMS) and I can exchange content easily and quickly. Other companies don’t do […]
We are now running PHP 7.3 on wp.cool and are happy about it
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 25.12.2018 at 6:42 pm
It seems relatively painless to upgrade WordPress to the new PHP 7.3 version on the server-side. WordPress ist often criticized these days, there were some disruptions caused by page builders and the new Gutenberg editor. But one thing which is just as important is that as a WordPress site owner, you are able to always upgrade to the newest PHP versions. It is unbelievable that many, many owners of WordPress sites do not give a shit about keeping their technical base up to date. I wrote about […]

Why you actually should use WordPress to send newsletter emails
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 05.10.2018 at 1:48 pm
Whenever I do web research on WordPress and newsletter tools for WordPress, I stumble across an aged post on wpbeginner.com with the headline: “Why You Should Never Use WordPress to Send Newsletter Emails“. With more than 100 comments and 147 shares on social networks, this post got a whole lot of attention, and obviously, Google likes this post. It shows up whenever I am searching for WordPress newsletter related tools on Google. And let me tell you: I really don’t like this […]
Oasis Workflow: Turn WordPress into an Editorial Calendar and Workflow Manager
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 22.09.2018 at 1:16 pm
Looking for a WordPress plugin which enables to to establish an entire editorial workflow with quality management and processes? Don’t look any further. Oasis Workflow is the tool I have chosen for this purpose, and I can only advise you to do so, too. I discovered this fantastic plugin because I was fed up with the pricing and some other policies of these Content Management Tools out there. Sometimes, the companies offering these tools want you to pay several hundred USD per month just […]
Why you should check WordPress sites you have migrated with the Duplicator plugin right now
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 12.09.2018 at 12:27 pm
If you’ve used the popular Duplicator plugin to migrate a WordPress site, it is time to check this installation right now. The simpe reasons: There could be files left over from the migration process, and currently, there is a growing number of scans by attackers trying to exploit these files. There was no vulnerable code found in the Duplicator plugin itself. The problem is that when using Duplicator to migrate or restore a backed-up copy of a WordPress site, there are two critical files […]
Make Chrome 69 display URLs completely and stop hiding subdomains
by Bernhard Jodeleit on 11.09.2018 at 9:52 am
Google is currently changing the way Chrome (version 69) is displaying URLs. So-called “scheme and trivial subdomains” are hidden in the browser’s adress bar (Omnibox). URL prefixes like ‘www’ or ‘m.’ are hidden. In order to see these subdomains, users have to double click the URL. Some advanced users are quite upset: Please revert this change, this is an alienation to every Web user, they need and have the right to know which URL are they visiting and […]

Security updates for Divi and other ElegantThemes products
Today we have installed a number of security updates for our hosting customers. This affects ElegantThemes products, including the popular Divi theme. ElegantThemes fixed a problem discovered by an independent security researcher. Protection against the vulnerability provides an update to the latest versions as of 12.03.2019. If you update your designs and plugins to the latest versions, the patch will be applied and your website will be protected. The problem affected: Divi Extra Bloom Monarch the Divi Builder Plugin Some security precautions against Cross-Site-Forgery-Attacks requests could possibly be bypassed by the vulnerability. Although these attacks were previously blocked by user permission checks, such checks alone are not sufficient to protect against all CSRF attacks. Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) is an attack method that technically forces a Web site user to perform unwanted actions in a Web application in which they are currently authenticated. CSRF attacks target stateful requests, not data theft, because the attacker has no way of seeing the response to the fake request. Our hosting customers consistently benefit from lifelong updates for all ElegantThemes products. We apply ongoing security updates automatically. In addition, all websites are now undergoing an additional forensic malware check (server-wide and independent of the CMS solutions installed). Whoever becomes aware of the vulnerability through this article and does not have a valid update license for Divi & Co. can use the Security Patcher Plugin from ElegantThemes. This also closes the vulnerability.
